Yes, the 5 free movies are mail-in from toshiba and all you need is the bar code from the box I think

I think the five free movies offer is separate, so it doesn't matter where you bought your player, just when. Here's the link.

BTW, the cheapest I've seen the HD-A2 is on Amazon, where earlier this week it was on sale for $249.99 plus $19 shipping from a vendor. Unfortunately, it only was at this price for a couple of hours!

Actually Costco changed their return policy to a max of 90 days.

As WiFiSpy said, the new policy applies to TVs, computers, cameras, and iPods, but not DVD players. Go to any TV on Costco's website and you see the new policy under 'Shipping and Terms'.

Maybe Costco's 90 day return policy doesn't apply to DVD players, but I think it's pretty lame on the customer's part to buy one of these things and return it for a full refund two years later if, say, HD DVD loses the format war.

Forgive me for being HD ignorant but....
Does this unit play regular DVDs too?
It says it upconverts them, but I can't tell it will do that by running a feed from another regular dvd player.
If so, what's wrong with a 100-150 buck gamble that HD DVD will win the format war?
Was just about to get an upconverter but this could do in a pinch if I could play legit hd movies too.

definitely pick it up if you are in the market for an upconverter. Grab a netflix subscription and you are set.

I got mine and I love it. HDMI cable is included in the box too!
Remote could be jazzier but I'm eventually going to move to a Universal Remote.
Once Blu-ray gets down to this level I'll snatch one of those.
I'm looking forward to getting an HDV camcorder and editing my video to playback on my D2 player. Life's good.

I'm probably known as a Blu-ray supporter here, but if you are in the market to get another DvD player or want one that upconverts for HD goodness this price point is pretty nice.
I still believe that with all the Big Studios supporting BR, especially the family friendly titles that will come from Disney, that BR will be winning the war based on Volumne and selection of titles. Blu-ray already has over 15% more movie titles out than HD DVD and likely will keep releasing more every month being as they have more studios supporting them.
However, even with that likely to happen, this is a tempting pricepoint to get upconvert on a DvD library.

It may be lame to return a year-old HD DVD player, but Cohtco shoppers used to buy PLASMAS and then return them two years later for full credit and buy the newer models. Which is why they changed their policy on TVs.
I don't think this is aush a good idea here since the HD DVDs you buy will cost more than the player anyway.

And I wonder what the danger is that, at $249, some shoppers will think the HD DVD is JUST another upconverting DVD player, given the way that makers of those things have advertised them as having "HD" outputs.

well i got me one today at circuit city for 299 and my dvds look even better. the guy in the store told me blu ray players wasnt realy selling but when this player went on sale u could not pass it by.he also said they had alot of ps3s in stock now whats all that about

My Costco is anti-HD DVD. I say this, because after the initial HD DVD launch in my Costs more than a year ago they have never gotten any additional stock in. In fact, after selling out of their initial store inventory, they got rid of the display (never to be seen again).
I guess the middle-class neighborhoods are too poor for HD DVD in the eyes of Costco.

Actually at Best Buy right now you can get a Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player for $200 if you bundle it with the purchase of an HDTV. I know, having to buy a new TV to get a HD disc player may not seem like a deal, but if you're in the market for a new TV why not?

I've answered my own question, here it is for your info.
The discs you can choose are one from each category:
Category A - Apollo 13, The Chronicles of Riddick, Seabiscuit
Category B - Casablanca, Constantine, Dukes of Hazzard
Category C - Four Brothers, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Category D - The Rundown, Blazing Saddles, U2: Rattle and Hum
Category E - U-571, The Perfect Storm, We Were Soldiers
